If you take part in endurance sports, then you’ve been there… the wall!

That feeling of sudden fatigue, loss of energy, and negativity that comes with the depletion of your stored glycogen.

As a runner I tend to experience this no matter my fitness levels or challenge – it is all relative to the distance and my exerted effort… 18 miles into a marathon or 3 km into a 5 km!

This is something that we also encounter in our daily lives – not getting that promotion, fighting a seemingly endless ‘to do’ list, or being stuck in a loveless job but not knowing how to break free. You get it… we’ve all been there.

How do you overcome the wall? Lessons from life and running have taught me that you can:

  • Build your mental resilience. As Eliud Kipchoge (fastest marathoner of all time) says ‘if you don’t control your mind, your mind will control you’. Learn to recognise the feelings of doubt that question if you can do it, label them as saboteurs, and stand up to them and challenge them!
  • Break things down. Don’t look too far ahead and focus on the next way-point – the next mile marker or the next step in your plan. Get to this… and focus on the next milestone. Repeat!
  • Draw on your achievements. How did you go last time? Did you make it through the wall and the negative feelings – yes. Did you show up to that meeting and make the points you prepared – yes. Is this your first rodeo – no. Ok, let’s go!
  • Focus on your motivators. What is driving you to succeed? Your family at the finish line, the funds raised for your charity… your increased confidence, your new job or career path. Visualise these when the going gets tough!

Have you hit the wall?

– Are you struggling to be more productive?
– Do you want to feel more confident?
– Are you navigating a career or life transition?

I can help you.
