A dream written down with a date is a goal
A goal broken down into steps is a plan
A plan backed by action becomes reality

2022 marks 10 years since I started running. Running has allowed me to understand the power of a positive mindset in facing challenges, adapting, developing, and succeeding. I’ve been reflecting on how the lessons I’ve learnt from running apply to coaching:

  • Dream big – when I first laced up my trainers, I could never have dreamed that I would go on to run marathons and ultras. I’ve learnt that you are more powerful than you know and can do more than you think. Coaching helps you set incredible goals that will transform you and your life
  • Chunk it up – my 40th year led to the inevitable marathon sign up (apparently male entries for marathons peak around ‘milestone years’!). It was a big commitment but I trusted my plan, focusing on each session and not looking too far ahead. Coaching helps you break down your goals into practical steps that are less daunting and continue to move you towards your goals
  • Focus on what’s important – whilst stats are helpful to me, I measure how I feel when I’m running. Coaching helps you track what matters to you and evaluate the progress you’re making
  • Be confident in yourself – I spent a lot of time comparing myself to other runners…why could they run further and faster than me? I didn’t feel like a real ‘runner’. After pushing too hard and getting injured I realised that I could do things on my terms: I run…so I am a runner! Coaching helps you build confidence in who you are and the courage to take on challenges
  • Be resilient – there will be setbacks and rest/recovery is just as important as playing full out. I’ve taken breaks from running to reflect on my progress, understand why things went off track, and refocus on my goals. Coaching helps you build resilience and perspective
  • Celebrate progress – acknowledge your achievements…then go again, as there is always another challenge ahead. I look at my running photos and medals and how I felt in those races – this motivates me for the next challenge. Coaching helps you appreciate your successes and how to build on them
