Executive Coaching for Mid-Career Professionals | Clarity, confidence and momentum for your next chapter

WHAT IF FEAR ISN’T THE PROBLEM? It comes up in co WHAT IF FEAR ISN’T THE PROBLEM?

It comes up in coaching more than almost any other emotion.

Not always by name.  Instead, it sounds like:

“I don’t think I’m ready.”
“What if it doesn’t work?”
“I should probably stay where I am.”

Different words. Same feeling.

The truth is that fear isn’t always the enemy.

Sometimes it’s information.
Sometimes it’s wisdom.
Sometimes it’s a sign that we’re standing on the edge of growth…

🔵 Fear as data
🔵 Fear as fuel
🔵 Fear as courage waiting to move
🔵 Fear as a lesson
🔵 Fear as a warning
🔵 Fear as a limiting belief
🔵 Fear as an old story
🔵 Fear as self-protection
🔵 Fear as perspective
🔵 Fear as uncertainty
🔵 Fear as experience speaking
🔵 Fear as a values signal
🔵 Fear as resourcefulness yet to be discovered
🔵 Fear as resistance
🔵 Fear as being human

The challenge isn’t eliminating fear. It’is understanding what it’s trying to tell us.

Sometimes fear is pointing towards a genuine risk.
Sometimes it’s protecting us from embarrassment, disappointment, or rejection.
Sometimes it’s simply uncomfortable because we’re attempting something that matters.

A promotion.
A career change.
A difficult conversation.
Setting a boundary.
Starting a business.

The absence of fear isn’t usually the goal.

The goal is learning to carry it well.

As Susan David writes: “Courage is fear walking.”

I’ve found that many mid-career professionals don’t need more confidence before they act.

They need enough self-awareness to understand their fear, enough perspective to put it in context, and enough courage to take the next step anyway.

What role does fear play in your life right now, and what might it be trying to tell you?

THE BALANCE OF GROWTH “Each of you is perfect the THE BALANCE OF GROWTH

“Each of you is perfect the way you are... and you can use a little improvement.”

There’s something beautifully human in this quote from Shunryu Suzuki.

So often, we swing between two extremes:

💬 “I’m fine as I am — I don’t need to change.”
💬 “I’ll only be enough once I improve.”

Suzuki seems to hold both truths together at once.

You are already worthy. And you are still becoming.

That balance feels especially relevant in mid-career life and leadership.

Many accomplished professionals I work with are carrying an invisible tension:

🔗 Striving for growth, promotion, impact, reinvention — while quietly feeling they are only as valuable as their next achievement.

Yet sustainable growth rarely comes from self-rejection.

It tends to come from self-awareness, honesty, curiosity, and compassion.

Acceptance says: “I don’t need to earn my right to exist, belong, or matter.”

Growth says: “There is still more of me to discover, refine, and express.”

The combination creates a very different energy:

🌿 Less shame-driven striving
🌿 More intentional development
🌿 Less perfectionism
🌿 More grounded ambition

It becomes:

🌀 Improving without constantly feeling inadequate
🌀 Learning without self-criticism
🌀 Evolving without abandoning yourself

I also think there’s humility in the phrase “a little improvement.”

Not endless optimisation. Not becoming a completely different person. Just remaining open to learning.

A little more patience.
A little more courage.
A little more honesty.
A little more presence.

Perhaps that’s enough.

And perhaps real growth starts when we stop seeing ourselves as problems to fix, and instead as people to understand, nurture, and gently develop over time.

WHO AM I AS A COACH, NOW? Not what do I do as a c WHO AM I AS A COACH, NOW?

Not what do I do as a coach.
Not how do I coach.
But who am I becoming through this work?

It’s a question I’ve been reflecting on in coaching supervision as I continue to evolve as a coach, business owner and human.

When I first trained, my focus was on learning the craft: the models, the questions, the competencies. I wanted to become technically excellent and create real value for my clients.

Those things still matter.
But something has shifted.

I’ve become less interested in asking the perfect question and more interested in offering my full attention.

Less attached to coaching models.
More trusting of the relationship unfolding in front of me.

Less focused on process.
More focused on presence.

As part of this reflection, I’ve been revisiting client feedback and testimonials.

Not as marketing.
As evidence.
As a mirror.

The same words kept appearing.
Calm. Safe. Thoughtful. Human. Listening. Challenge. Clarity. Confidence.

“Thoughtful, structured and genuinely transformative.”
“Calm and challenging.”
“Compassion with accountability.”

One theme appeared again and again.
Clients described feeling safe enough to think honestly, but challenged enough not to stay where they were.

“He creates a space that feels safe, but he doesn’t let you stay stuck.”
“Everything has come from within... Stu just helped me unearth it.”
“He helped me clear the fog.”

That balance means a great deal to me.

Coaching isn’t about making people comfortable.
Nor is it about pushing people relentlessly.

It’s about creating the conditions where people can see themselves more clearly and find the confidence to take their next meaningful step.

From there, they solve it themselves.

That feels like the real work.

This journey has changed me too.

As a coach.
As a business owner.
And as a human.

Coaching isn’t about helping people become someone else.
It’s about helping them become more fully themselves.

With greater self-awareness.
Greater confidence.
And greater choice.

For me, that’s work worth doing.

VALUES – YOUR GUIDING LIGHTS What matters most to VALUES – YOUR GUIDING LIGHTS

What matters most to you in your life?

It’s a pretty big question to tackle, but it’s an important one. Understanding our values and living life with them in mind influences the decisions we make and in turn, how we choose to live our lives. Our values are our guiding principles – when we are aware of them they light our way.

A value is something you believe to be important in the way you live your life. Everyone’s personal values will be different and yours will very much depend on who you are.

So how does understanding our values impact us?

✴️ When we spend time consciously thinking about our values, we develop more self-awareness and understand how they impact on our lives and goals, enabling us to make decisions with greater confidence

✴️ It allows us to assess where we feel at our best and where we feel we can make the most difference, or conversely, where we feel stressed or tuned out and tired

✴️ For example, if we find ourselves in a demanding job that takes over our personal life but one of our values is family, we know we will be happier in a job that allows for quality family time

Pause for a moment of reflection:

⏸️ How far do you understand your values?
⏸️ Where are you honouring these in your life?
⏸️ Where are your values not being served?

6 STEPS TO UNDERSTANDING YOUR VALUES

Now try the steps in the graphics!

This will allow you to start to understand your values and how they impact on your life and goals – where you feel at your best and most energised, or where you feel stress and need to realign and make some changes.

COACHING & VALUES

I work with my clients to enable them to:

💡 Understand the things in their life that matter the most to them
💡 Build self-awareness and self-acceptance
💡 Review how far their goals are aligned with their values
💡 Foster willingness and commitment to change
💡 Reflect on their values to keep on track

If you’d like to deepen your understanding of your values and how they are showing up in your life, I’d love to work with you.

Where do you feel you are truly honouring your values?

AMERICANO. OAT LATTE. CORTADO. EXTRA SHOT. DECAF. AMERICANO. OAT LATTE. CORTADO. EXTRA SHOT. DECAF.

When did ordering a coffee become a strategic decision?

I was laughing about this with a friend recently as we caught up.

We stood there…scanning the board like it was a menu of life choices.

Because coffee shops today?

They don’t just offer coffee.

They offer possibility.

Different styles. Different strengths. Different combinations depending on mood, time of day, or what you think you should be having.

Sound familiar?

☕ We all have our “go-to”

Mine’s a flat white. Reliable. Comfortable. Does the job.

Just like many of us have a default way of leading, working, deciding.

☕ But then context shifts.

Mid-morning meeting? Maybe something lighter. Long catch-up walk? Go larger.
Late afternoon? Decaf.

And suddenly, the “usual” doesn’t quite fit.

☕ Mid-career can feel a bit like this.

It’s often when this really matters.

Because what got you here — your “flat white” — might not be what’s needed next.

New environments. New expectations. New challenges.

Same person. Different blend.

Here’s a light reflection over your next coffee:

👉 What’s your “go-to” style?
👉 Where is it serving you well?
👉 And where might a different blend be useful right now?

Because sometimes growth isn’t about changing who you are. It’s about expanding your menu.

FINDING YOUR OWN RHYTHM  Over the last 12 months, FINDING YOUR OWN RHYTHM

Over the last 12 months, I’ve been much more intentional about how I structure my week.

Not just to be more productive, but to create space for the things that matter — relationships, reflection, planning, and follow-through.

It’s something I support a lot of my coaching clients with too.

How to set themselves up to be as effective, creative, and fulfilled as they can be — in work and in life.

And like most things I coach around, it’s also something I’m working on myself as I’m not immune to the pull of busyness, distraction, or autopilot either.

Here are three ways I structure my week to give me the rhythm I need:

⏰ Monday Morning – Connection Hour

A standing hour each week to nurture my network and maintain momentum with relationship-building.

Prompts:
• Who did I enjoy connecting with last week?
• Who might benefit from a follow-up or deeper conversation?
• Any opportunities, insights, or potential clients that emerged?

⏰ Wednesday Morning – Midweek Momentum

This is my space to keep the wheels turning and avoid build-up.

Prompts:
• Who do I need to follow up with (clients, collaborators, prospects)?
• What open threads need closing or nudging forward?
• What simple admin can I knock off now to stay light and clear?

⏰ Friday Afternoon – Next Week Now

A chance to pause, look ahead, and be intentional about what’s coming.

Prompts:
• What’s coming up next week — and what needs prep, energy, or presence?
• What’s my focus or intention for the week ahead?
• Where can I create space or reduce friction now to ease next week?

This rhythm isn’t perfect, but it helps me feel more grounded, less reactive, and more aligned with how I want to show up.

How have you been more intentional about finding your own rhythm?

YOUR CAREER, REFOCUSED It’s something I see time YOUR CAREER, REFOCUSED

It’s something I see time and time again in my work…

Talented, experienced people moving through their careers at pace — yet rarely pausing to step back and ask the bigger questions:

❓ Where am I actually heading?
❓ What matters most to me now?
❓ What would “better” really look like from here?

That’s exactly why I created this.

A simple, practical Career Growth Workbook — designed to give you space to reflect, refocus, and move forward with intention.

Inside, you’ll find prompts and exercises to help you:

✅ Assess where you are in your career right now
✅ Reconnect with your core values, strengths, and motivations
✅ Envision what a more aligned and fulfilling role could look like
✅ Build a clear, realistic roadmap for what comes next

Whether you’re feeling stuck, considering a change, or just want to be more deliberate about your direction — this is a great place to start.

WALK & TALK  Not new. Not complicated. But quietl WALK & TALK

Not new. Not complicated. But quietly powerful.

I was chatting about this recently with someone in my network — how some of the most open, insightful coaching conversations don’t happen sitting opposite each other.

They happen side by side.

There’s something special about walking together that shifts things.

No intense eye contact. No “performance” of being coached. No pressure to have the perfect answer.

Just movement. Space. Air. And often…better thinking.

But why is this?

🔍 The sideways conversation

When we’re not face-to-face, something softens. Conversations can feel more natural and reflective.  For some clients, it’s easier to say the thing they’ve been holding onto.

🌿 The environment does some of the work

Nature has a way of creating perspective. A long path. Open space. Changing scenery. That stuck feeling? It often loosens its grip.

⚡ Energy changes

Sitting in a room (or on a screen) can keep us in our heads. Walking brings the body in. You notice energy rise. Ideas flow differently. There’s something about movement that helps thinking move too.

🧠 A different context, a different outcome

Sometimes clients don’t need more time thinking about a problem. They need a different context to see it. Walk & talk offers a gentle disruption. A new lens.

Where might changing the environment change the quality of your thinking?

COACHING + ME “Coaching has changed the way I thi COACHING + ME

“Coaching has changed the way I think and feel.”

A client shared this with me recently.

It’s a simple statement, but it stayed with me because it gets to the heart of why I became a coach and why I continue to love this work.

When I look back, coaching wasn’t a career choice driven by a business plan. It was driven by values.

Curiosity. Learning. Growth.

A belief that people are capable of more than they often give themselves credit for.

A belief that when we create the space to think, reflect, and challenge ourselves, positive change becomes possible.

Understanding my own values gave me the confidence to step into coaching as a second career. Looking back, it was one of the best decisions I’ve made.

What I love most is the privilege of walking alongside people as they navigate change.
Listening to what’s being said — and sometimes what isn’t.

Helping people see themselves more clearly.

Asking questions that unlock new perspectives.

Holding up a mirror that helps them recognise strengths, patterns, and possibilities they may not have seen before.

And creating a space where they can think honestly, make choices intentionally, and take action with confidence.

I also love the connection that coaching brings.

The trust built between coach and client.

The conversations that matter.

The opportunity to learn from every person I work with.

And the relationships I’ve built with fellow coaches, mentors, supervisors, and peers who continue to support my own growth.

There’s a Japanese concept called Ikigai that I’ve always been drawn to — the idea of finding the intersection between what you love, what you’re good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

Long before I started my coaching qualification, I think I was searching for my Ikigai. It wasn’t until I started coaching that I realised I’d found it.

So when a client says coaching has changed the way they think and feel, I’m reminded why I do what I do.

Not because coaching provides answers. But because it helps people find their own.

What do you love about what you do?
