I’d take a punt that we can all recall a time when getting out for a walk and some fresh air helped us – when that big, daunting, complicated thing in front of us seemed less so on return.

I love connecting with nature and believe it is good for our mind, body, and soul. Whether we are feeling positive and optimistic, or feeling stuck and unsure of our way forward, it can benefit our cognitive state (ability to think), emotional state (relationship to our emotions), and kinaesthetic state (connection with our body), as backed up by neuroscience.

My first ever client programme was delivered by walking and talking, each session would see us meander our way across the local parks and walkways. This was in equal part challenging and rewarding – I was stripped back to my core as a new coach, out of my comfort zone and with no notes or laptop to aid me, but could almost instantly see and feel the benefits for my client and our relationship.

Since this formative experience, I have seen some of my clients most powerful breakthroughs come when we are outdoors. But why can it be so effective in coaching?

🌳 Outdoor activities stimulate the release of serotonin and dopamine, the neurotransmitters related to mood regulation. Mind, the mental health charity, conducted a study in which 90% of participants felt their self-esteem increase after a country walk

☀ Exposure to natural light enhances circadian rhythms, promoting better sleep and cognitive functioning, supporting learning, problem-solving, memory, and reasoning

🍃 The prefrontal cortex, which is associated with attention and focus, benefits from the diverse sensory environment provided by being in nature, fostering creativity and mental well-being

💬 As the interaction is often less direct and intense, it can feel more comfortable and relaxing, ensuring the brain’s executive function (decision making, problem solving, memory, deep thinking) is running at capacity

👟 There are direct health benefits from vitamin D exposure, physical movement and low-intensity exercise, and access to fresh air

🤝 It can strengthen the trust and relationship between client and coach as you physically and metaphorically walk alongside each other, partnering and working together to achieve the client’s goals
