I bet you can recall a time when you’ve been on both sides of an ‘advice monster’ being unleashed, both as an advice-giver and an advice-taker.

It’s in our nature to want to help others – we don’t like to see people unhappy or stuck. But despite our best intentions, we all bring biases and blind spots and the advice we give is usually more about us than the person we are trying to help. We presuppose they have the same perspectives, beliefs, and needs as us – which often isn’t true.

Advice is often most effective in tactical situations through the exchange of factual information. However, for more complex situations, like the ones we face in our personal and professional lives, it can be ineffective and worse still, unhelpful.

Navigating challenging situations and complex decision-making requires the confidence to stay in your own skin, rather than squeezing into someone else’s.

This is where coaching can help.
